Joel Richard

JOEL RICHARD

Joel was first introduced to music at the age of twelve, via the guitar.  He quickly developed a passion for music, performing in many bands during his teenage years, opening for top hardcore and metal acts such as Agnostic Front, M.O.D. and Hatebreed.

His interest in film music started at an early age, influenced in particular by the unusual music sensibilities of film directors Stanley Kubrick, Darren AronofskyDanny Boyle.  Richard states "I’ve always been drawn to films where the director views the world from a different angle and is fearless in regards to showing their perspective.  These are the films that visually and musically break new ground and force you to think."

In 1999 Richard was recruited by music editor Brian Richards, (Fight Club, Shrek) of Media Cutters, the music editorial department of Hans Zimmer’s company Remote Control.  Music Editing at Media Cutters provided Richard with the arena to further develop his eye for matching score to picture.

In 2001, prominent composers John Powell and Gavin Greenaway (formerly of Air-Edel and Media Ventures) quickly noticed Richard’s talents.  Working with Powell and Greenaway, Richard fostered his skills as a film composer.  He collaborated with Powell on numerous films including scores for the Universal Studios hit "The Bourne Identity" and Warner Brothers "The Adventures Of Pluto Nash."

Richard has also collaborated with other Hollywood composers.  Composing with Nate Barr on various projects including the CBS series "Kate Brasher" starring Mary Stuart Masterson, Miramax’s comedy "Going Greek" and Broken Lizard’s "Slammin Salmon."  With Tyler Bates for the WB’s "The Black Sash" as well as Mike Suby for ABC’s "The Scholar" and "Kyle XY."

In terms of solo ventures, credits include the and National Geographic film "The Women of K2."  Various arrangements for Dreamworks "Shark Tales" dvd, the dramedy "Pope Dreams," starring Julie Hagerty and Stephen Tobolowsky, the psychological thriller "Between," starring Poppy Montgomery, for which he won for best score at the Baja California Film Festival, the ABC Family mini-series "Fallen," as well as,  Ridley and Tony Scott’s remake of "The Andromeda Strain." Current projects include "George’s Intervention," a zombie comedy and "Life In Uganda,” a film that aims to raise awareness about the prevailing conditions of this struggling country
